Description
Rhododendron is a beautiful plant and grows wild in the West of Ireland. Often more of a small tree than a shrub, it can grow as high as three metres. Forming dense thickets, it bears evergreen, hairless, shiny, elliptical leaves, dark green above, light green below. From May to July, mauve-purple, five-lobed, bell-shaped flowers (4 – 6 cm) are held in large clusters, making a stunning display.
It is spreading so rapidly that, unfortunately, it had to be placed on the current list of Invasive Alien species. Nevertheless they add a great splash of colour to the green landscape, which I like very much!
This picture is a view taken from Dunboy Castle, Beara Peninsula, County Cork, Ireland.
