Description
A landscape showing, from the south-west, the gardens and the small lake surrounding Old Scotney Castle, a 14th century moated manor, now in ruins, in the valley of the River Bewl, in Kent,England.
Roger de Ashburnham built the Old Castle as a fortified manor house between 1378 and1380 on the site of the ancient manor of Scotney. It has had many different owners, among them Edward Hussey III who built the present New Castle and laid out, in the 19th century, the gardens around the Old Castle in the Picturesque style. In 1970 his son's nephew bequeathed Scotney to the National Trust, in whose ownership it still remains.
The gardens were designed by the gardener William Gilpin between 1835 and 1843.
They are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a great example of the English Picturesque style.
The National Trust is a charity and membership organisation for heritage conservation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The National Trust for Scotland is independent.

A very beautiful photo Catherine. It looks like a fairytale. I looked up your gallery and was surprised that you had only a few words on your bio. I would be interesting to read more about you. maybe you could update that and tell us more about you.
