Description
A fence surrounds this 200 years old sycamore in order to keep animals and humans at a safe distance. Compacted ground means less oxygen for the roots, and a looser, more aerated soil means a longer life for this tree, perhaps another 100 or 200 years. One of a couple planted around 1800 to replace an older pair, the sycamore stands proudly in Knole Park, near Sevenoaks in Kent. Knole House, birthplace of the writer Vita Sackville-West, is perhaps the finest exemple of an early Tudor manor house in England, although it's earliest buildings date from the mid-fifteen century. So our aged sycamore is a relative newcomer.
